Major roading changes scheduled for Islington „„ By Georgia O’Connor-Harding ISLINGTON’S crippling traffic congestion may be alleviated after news that Halswell Junction Rd will be extended. It will be extended from Foremans Rd to Waterloo Rd providing a new link across the railway with the aim to maintain traffic flow. It is the first step in a major overhaul of the roading network from the Halswell Junction Rd roundabout at Springs Rd through to Islington and Hornby. City council head of transport Chris Gregory said project will consist of an alteration to the existing intersection of Foremans and Halswell Junction Rd to channel trucks from the north eastern section of Foremans Rd. By creating a bypass, the extension will take heavy traffic off Halswell Junction Rd as part of a road network improvement to support the Christchurch Transport Strategic Plan. The project aims to complete a local freight route linking the northern section of Halswell Junction Rd from Waterloo to Pound Rd. The city council is yet to say when work on the extension will

start. The Waterloo Rd railway crossing will be shifted several hundred metres west linking up Halswell Junction Rd to go through to Waterloo Business Park. Mr Gregory said the new railway crossing is a replacement to the nearby crossing.

He said all works need to be completed before the link can operate. Halswell Junction Rd carries approximately 28,000 vehicles per weekday, a NZ Transport Agency spokeswoman said. The existing Halswell Junction Rd from Foremans Rd will have a no exit road with a cul-de-sac

proposed for vehicles to turn around in. All roads affected will by the project will include Foremans Rd, Main South Rd, Pound Rd and Waterloo Rd at the railway crossing. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said the link would

take a lot of heavy traffic off Halswell Junction Rd. “There is a lot of volume going down that little section of road and when the bypass goes in it will make it quieter because it is all residential on one side,â€? he said. He said the railway warning bells will be taken away from the residential area on Halswell Junction Rd making the area more peaceful for residents. Meanwhile, plans for the wider Halswell Junction Rd project is still yet to get under way. City council transport operation manager Steffan Thomas said the city council are completing an options report and expect to have the scheme design finished with a preferred option by September. “Our aim is to be able to consult with the community and affected stakeholders later in 2016,â€? he said. The entire Halswell Junction Rd extension is expected to be completed by 2018. HAVE YOUR SAY: Are you looking forward to the completion of the Halswell Junction Rd extension? News Good samaritans comfort dog after accident By Georgia O’Connor-Harding AFTER LOSING a treasure companion, Philippa Graham is on a mission to find a mysterious good samaritan who helped care for her dog following a car accident. Last month, Ms Graham’s old, but active, dog Luke was sadly put down after he was hit by a car after he went wandering. Immediately after the accident Luke was found by his owner surrounded by concerned young people. “A young women produced a double duvet and the men carefully put the old dog into it and carried him to my car nearby and told me where the emergency vet was.” For the past three weeks, Ms Graham has been busy doorknocking around Hansons Lane and Suva St trying to find the owner of the double duvet in hopes of thanking the “kind girl”. Ms Graham said she hopes to return the duvet which she has washed the blood stains from twice after the accident.

In Brief HALSWELL SKATE PARK CONSULTATION Last week the city council held a community consultation for the Halswell Skate Park. About 90 people were at the event including school children and teenagers. The consultation was an update from the city council confirming there will be a skate park in Halswell and they are looking for the best site out of Westlake Reserve, Halswell Domain or Knights Stream. A report from the evening will be presented at the next RiccartonWigram Community Board meeting on July 19. ORIENTEERING AT HALSWELL QUARRY PARK Three new orienteering courses were officially opened at Halswell Quarry Park last weekend. The new courses are a joint initiative between city council park rangers and the Peninsula and Plains Orienteering group. Council Regional Parks Manager Kay Holder said rangers and volunteers had spent the last month installing three permanent orienteering courses of varying levels of difficulty. Maps for the courses will be available from the Te Hapua Halswell Centre from the middle of this month.

WELL-LOVED DOG: A blissful Luke lying in the sunshine. “How I miss Luke . . . I would have liked him alive for just one more year. “I know that he was deaf and a bit blind but he was still an active and loving doorbell and guard dog so he is greatly missed by the family,” she said. The owner of the duvet can get in contact with Philippa by emailing simazine@yahoo.com or georgia.oconnor@starmedia. kiwi

WESTERN NEWS

Your Local Views Connect with your neighbourhood Deans Ave Precinct Society spokeswoman Claire Mulcock writes about making Riccarton more neighbourhood friendly: The Deans Avenue Precinct Society has taken on a new project to make our neighbourhood a more friendly place to live, and at the same time make sure that we are doing all we can to minimise crime and other anti-social behaviour. We get together as neighbours at our community barbecues, but we want to do more. We know from the work done by the Riccarton Neighbourhood Policing team that simple things that anyone of us can take care of, can make a big difference. It’s as easy as phoning the store to report a shopping trolley that has been dumped in the

street so that it can be picked up or using the free phone app “Snap, Send, Solve” to send a picture of graffiti to the city council and someone will come and remove it. To help keep the street tidy, we want to get into the habit of checking for litter and rubbish in the street when we put our red bins out for collection. These things may not seem important ways to keep crime down, but there is clear evidence that they help. At least as important as these things is knowing

who your neighbours are. If you’ve never met your neighbours how can you tell if people that you think are acting suspiciously could be actually out looking for a place to burgle? If you do see strangers and it doesn’t seem right, do phone the police on 111. We can all do something nice for a friend, a neighbour or a stranger. Give a smile, say “hello” and connect with the people around you. It feels good to give and everybody has something to offer, wherever you live. How will you play your part?

Readers respond to last week’s article about lowering the speed limit on sections of St Asaph St and Hagley Ave as well as 27 other roads in the city. They respond: Robert McGregor, of Harewood – This speed limit is a joke. Most cyclists I know with be breaking the speed limits most of the time. As many average 35km/h-plus as a rule. Michael J. Brathwaite, of Spreydon – I would have thought Karolin Potter would have had more sense than to suggest we have more 30km/h speed limits imposed on us – especially since no-one can keep to that speed in town. If one does manage it, over-confident pedestrians casually cross the road in front of one. I suppose it will take the deaths of a few pedestrians to convince the council such speed limits are a mistake. Also, it is hard to look out for pedestrians when one has to keep an eye constantly on one’s speedometer. If Ms Potter still lived around the corner from me, she would realise the impossibility of getting to Sydenham from our part of town via any route but Collins St.

If people drive at 70km/h there, there are appropriate penalties if they are caught, and it would be grossly unfair to punish everyone who uses the back streets around Church Square. If the council do not want motorists on these streets, they need to find a way of keeping the traffic moving on Brougham St, possibly by removing the median strip that has adversely affected property values and replacing it with another lane. News Increase in number of thefts from cars By Tom Doudney A SPATE of thefts from cars in the city’s south western suburbs has escalated, with about 50 cars having had property stolen from them in the last month. Senior Constable Deb Smalley said most of the thefts had occurred at night and the vast majority involved cars which had been left unlocked by their owners. “The trend has continued to grow at an alarming rate,” she said. “We really are appealing to people in the strongest way to remove valuables or anything that they don’t want to have lost from their vehicles whenever possible and particularly overnight, and to take care of the security of their vehicles and their homes.” Valuables taken have included credit cards, cash, clothing, tools and electronics. While the thefts had occurred as far east as Westmorland, most had been in the area around Westlake Reserve. However, Senior Constable Smalley cautioned that future

offending might not follow these trends so residents should not be complacent just because they were not in the Westlake Reserve area. They should lock their cars whatever the time of day and regardless of whether it was parked in their drive or on the street, she said. Police were looking at suspicious sales of property

on TradeMe as part of their inquiries into the thefts. Credit cards stolen in the thefts have been used at service stations and police have also attempted to use CCTV at those stations to identify the perpetrator. Last week, police handed out notices at the Halswell Supervalue about the importance of removing valuables from cars.

RICCARTON COMMUNITY CENTRE There will be an opportunity to give public feedback at the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board meeting today on the draft design of the Riccarton Community Centre. Last month the Western News reported the draft designs will include a staff area, function room, foyer, kitchen, rain garden but no city council library. Copies of the design have been available at the Riccarton Service Centre, Fendalton Service Centre and Library and Upper Riccarton Library. FUNDING SOUGHT Canterbury University student Ashley Stuart, of Ilam, has been granted $400 from the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board’s discretionary response fund. The 19-year-old applied for the fund to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards in Washington DC from July 19-26. The conference will be a weeklong intense leadership training course hosting approximately 300 young leaders from over 40 countries. QUARRY HEARING A resource consent hearing for the Canterbury Aggregates Producer Group’s application

began yesterday. The total number of people who submitted to the quarry hearing was 614, with 138 people asking to be heard at the hearing. The hearing is expected to last seven days and the head commissioners are Sharon McGarry, David Mountfort and Hugh Thorpe. The hearing is being held at Environment Canterbury’s offices on 200 Tuam St at the Waimakariri Room. CRASH INJURY A person in his 20s sustained moderate injuries following a car crash. St John was alerted at 8.19am last Thursday on Memorial Ave. One ambulance was sent to the scene. The person was taken to Christchurch Hospital. ROAD CHANGE Traffic this week along Russley Rd will be temporarily realigned to the east. Two lanes will be maintained northbound, while southbound traffic will need to merge into one lane. This will allow the first half of the southern airport access underpass to be built. When the world is your stage Ailis Oliver-Kerby, 21, is fast on track to becoming a professional performer after being accepted into performing arts schools in London, New York and Australia. She spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding about living all around the world while growing up, her love of the arts and being related to broadcaster Bernadine Oliver-Kerby. Great speaking to you. How are you finding performing in Showbiz Christchurch’s Hairspray so far? I have been absolutely loving it. It has just been such a positive experience and to have audiences at last is so different. Having the laughs is more fun. I’m playing Penny Pingleton. She is such a lovable character with great one-liners. Hairspray is one of my favourite shows and Penny is one of my ultimate roles. I did Hairspray in the United Kingdom but I always wanted to play Penny. When I came to Dunedin I got that, which is cool, and now I have it again, which is special. You’ve been all around the world. Tell me about the places you’ve lived in? It’s always a hard question when someone asks where I am from because it is quite a long story. I was born in Auckland and then lived in Christchurch as a primary school kid. My family moved to England for a couple of years before my teenage years. It was back and forth from England to here. Then, when I was about 12, we moved to Hong Kong because my Dad worked as a pilot with a Hong Kong airline – Cathay Pacific. It was getting really hard for the family to be so split up all the time. Dad was always flying so we all moved there together. What was growing up in Hong Kong like?

It was such an amazing adventure. We were there for seven years and there was a great theatre scene in Hong Kong as well. The dance is competitive there. I worked hard with my singing and dancing at the international Island School. I met lots of British, American and Australian teachers. It is really different in the middle of the city. So cultural. I feel home there now but I can see why people would have a cultural shock. And then you went to the United Kingdom to study? I was 16 and I heard about a musical theatre course in the United Kingdom. It was a pre-tertiary musical theatre course at Tring Park School for Performing Arts. I just wanted to be somewhere I could do this full-time. What drew you back to New Zealand? It felt like I needed to get back to my roots. I liked the look of Otago University – I had lots of old friends going there. The main building is kind of like Hogwarts. What’s the most valuable thing you’ve picked up from studying the performing arts? I think the hardest thing about this industry is all the set backs. And you have to believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself no one else will. I recently did the Christchurch International Musical Theatre Sum-

mer School and Andrea Burns, who is on Broadway in On Your Feet! at the moment, said to us: “If you’re ready, you never have to get ready”. It is all about being prepared. And you have to be prepared for every audition. Preparation is the one thing that can help you. You have got to appreciate the good moments and not let the bad moments suck it out of you. After getting accepted into the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York and Making it On Broadway in Sydney, it is my dream to work in West End productions. I most recently came second in the International Monologue Competition where I was lucky enough to receive more than 2000 votes. What an incredible variety of places to choose from. Have you thought about

what option you will take up? I do think London is where I want to be. I have worked there before and have contacts. I also just found out I got into Legally Blonde at the Court Theatre. I haven’t confirmed anything yet. I am trying to defer my place in London so I can do the show here and go the following year. Everything is still in limbo at the moment. Tell me a bit more about your family. Your dad is a pilot, what do the others do? My Mum studied psychology and she is a career coach. She is also a business owner. She does psychology assessments. She helps me with my CV. My brother Lachie is very talented. He has just released his album on SoundCloud called The Reach. His music is alternative rap and he creates his own beats. My brother is also a massive rugby player at school. When he was at Christ’s College he was in the first XV for rugby. He is very talented. What’s it like being related to Bernadine Oliver-Kerby? She is an amazing aunty. She is always there for me. I’ve been to Auckland quite a lot with my auditions and agency, Auckland Actors Ltd. She always drives me around and would do anything for us. She enjoys watching shows. She came and watched my brother in his school production of Cats and she came to see me in the Sound of Music with the Taieri Musical Society last year. She has an amazing voice as well. Not sure if she sings a lot anymore. It is her little secret. She was in musicals at school. You are so busy with your performing. What do you always make time for and value the most? I value my time with my family. I take my studies seriously. I loved doing my degree, reading and performing. I am lucky to have friends all over the world now which I value greatly.

News Homes wanted for exchange students

DENTISTS DAVID ROWLEY JENNY KIM

(03) 355 3888

WESTERN NEWS

AN exchange programme is asking for Christchurch families to open their doors to international students. Student Exchange Australia New Zealand will be sending high school-aged children to Christchurch, from as close as Australia, and as far away as Brazil and France. But, they need homes to send the students to. The group is a notfor-profit organisation that is registered with all state and territory Departments of Education around Australia and with the Ministry of Education. This month, they will be receiving students from Australia, Brazil, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. Their new arrivals plan to live with a host family and attend a local school for three, five or 10 months. Hosting an exchange student allows local families to experience a foreign culture first hand,

be exposed to a new language and pass on parts of their own culture. All students have at least basic levels of English, and would attend a school in the local area. CTV News now on Plains FM A COLLABORATION between two local news broadcasters started last week. Plains FM began live broadcasting the CTV evening news on June 7, running each weekday from 5.30-6pm. Plains FM is a community-run station based at Ara Institute of Canterbury, while CTV is locally owned by Star Media and has broadcast regional news since 1991. Plains FM manager Nicki Reece said it was a great local collaboration. “For us it’s a natural fit, because we’re firmly locally based with programmes by and for the community, and this a further reflection of what’s going on in a visual way at CTV. So it’s a really nice cross-pollination between two local entities.” Star Media editor-in-chief Barry Clarke said the association with Plains FM was another step for CTV as it broadens its reach in the Canterbury region. Plains FM is broadcast on 96.9 FM, and is also live streamed online at www.plainsfm.org.nz. CTV News can also be watched

Trade store supports Fiji rebuild project HORNBY Mitre 10 MEGA and The Salvation Army are working together to get much-needed building supplies to cyclone damaged regions of Fiji. The DIY and trade retailer has co-ordinated with its suppliers to provide roofing iron at a dis-

counted rate for The Salvation Army’s Fiji rebuild projects. Mitre 10 MEGA Hornby director Murray Smith said a lot of the credit goes to suppliers Roofing Industries NZ and NZ Steel for coming

through with the lowest price possible. “It really was a team effort, with everyone wanting to pitch in and do our part to help the rebuild efforts,” said Mr Smith. The Salvation Army has been

given $20,000 dollars in relief aid by corporate partners to assist in the rebuilding of a cyclone affected region in Fiji. “Roofing iron is in very short supply in Fiji at present. This shipment will be used to rebuild family homes in a number

of the worst affected towns and villages,” Salvation Army Public Relations Director Shane Chisholm said. The organisation will also take an additional 1000m of roofing iron due to support from Mitre 10 MEGA Hornby.

St Thomas on roll By G ordon Findlater ST THOMAS Of Canterbury’s first XV have turned their UC Championship around and are currently undefeated in their last three games. After starting the season with four consecutive losses, St Thomas grabbed their first win of the season against Ashburton 31-10. They then travelled to Lincoln High School the following week, winning 24-5. The latest round of the championship featured a trip south to Roncalli College, who have struggled this season. St Thomas took care of business claiming their third straight bonus point win 65-7. St Thomas rugby manager Brendon Biggs says Saturday’s performance was their best yet and believes the team could have won more games earlier in the year had they performed more in that manner. “We’re on a roll. At the start of the year you try to put structures in place and now after getting a few games under our belt those structures are now there.” Although the team will be hopeful of continuing their streak, they will be up against it when they meet UC Champion-

ship favourites Christchurch Boys’ High School. St Thomas’ have never beaten Christchurch Boys’ in the competition. However, history always has the potential to be made. In 2007, they almost defeated Boys High, when St Thomas’ full-back rushed his clearing kick on full-time and was famously charged down, allowing Christchurch Boys to secure a final minute try, winning the match.

FLYING HIGH: St Thomas’ line-out compete for the ball during their recent win over Lincoln High School .

LEARNINg fIRST aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? Not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPR. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen.

New Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

17

Be health smart this winter HaNDS arE the main pathways of germ transmission. Hand hygiene is therefore the most important measure to avoid the transmission of harmful germs. Wash your hands, before & after food preparation and eating, if you borrow someone elses equipment and of course after blowing your nose. For convienience it is a good idea to have hand sanitiser on hand to use in between washing. Sneezing & coughing into the crook of your arm or tissues rather than your hand, reduces the spread of airborne bugs. remove tissues to the rubbish immediately. Keep hydrated, two thirds of your body is made of water, so keeping hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Dehydration symptoms range from headaches to nausea to fatigue, but the effects of dehydration on your immune system are not always as obvious. Staying hydrated keeps the mucus membranes moist, which keeps the immune system functioning optimally. Unfortunately, lattes and wine don’t count, but upping your intake of water is incredibly beneficial. aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. You’ll notice the difference!

Eat in season, poor nutrition impairs the immune response. Fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and legumes or pulses are full of immune-boosting properties and antioxidants. Nature provides fresh seasonal foods to compensate for what our bodies are lacking at that time of year. Kiwifruit & citrus fruits that are in season throughout winter are packed with Vitamin C. Stress less, although short periods of stress can actually be good for us longterm chronic stress lowers our immunity, making us more susceptible to colds and flu. We all have our own ways of coping and reducing stress so whether it’s taking a bath, going to the gym, getting outdoors in the garden or having fun with the kids, do something to unwind. Not only are you doing your adrenal glands a favour, you’re also reducing your chances of being struck down by the latest virus. Get a good night’s sleep, sleep is essential for your body to rest, repair and rejuvenate. (Don’t you find you always tend to look your best after a good night’s sleep?) The human growth hormone that’s released during sleep helps repair your body at a cellular level, but it’s also beneficial for the immune system.
